A small group met on Thursday, March 25th. We planted onions (red and white), mesclun salad mix, marigolds and chard (rainbow, ruby and regular). There's still about a row and a half that needs planting.
The peach trees are blooming, the cherry trees are getting ready to bloom, two pears are budding, and the apple trees are showing tiny gray-green leaves at the ends of the branches.

After a very wet start to the year, we are off and running. Thank you to Mark Martin of the City of Salisbury for quickly tilling up the gardens in the dryest week we've had so far.
Members of the Garden Group met on Saturday, March 13th, a nice sunny warm day. We created rows and mulched in between each row and around the garden using newspapers and straw. Lots and lots of newspaper, we're hoping to cut down on the weeding this year. We planted one row of potatoes (the row…

When it's a sweet potato. We're planning to grow sweet potatoes this year in our garden, and I was surprised to learn the differences between the two root vegetables we call potatoes.
The regular old potato that we bake or boil or fry is a member of the family "Solanum tuberosum". To plant them, you simply cut the potato into sections around the "eyes" and stick it in the ground. Each section will grow & produce many potatoes.

The first Garden meeting of 2010 was held on Sunday February 26th. We had a small group, but as usual, charged ahead with planning. Once again, our overal goal is FOOD, and planting what will give us the most nutrition for the space and effort.
We will be using long rows (running from Council Street towards Liberty Street). The group agreed that the reason we had so many weeds last year was we didn't lay down enough newspaper, so this year we are going to be lavish with the…
