Welcome!

St. Luke's Episcopal Church welcomes you to our Community Garden site. Both the church and the garden are located in downtown Salisbury, NC. Our purpose is to grow food and give it to folks who need it. Simple enough! And along the way, we learn and grow and have a heck of a lot of fun together.

More planting

A small group met on Thursday, March 25th. We planted onions (red and white), mesclun salad mix, marigolds and chard (rainbow, ruby and regular). There's still about a row and a half that needs planting.

The peach trees are blooming, the cherry trees are getting ready to bloom, two pears are budding, and the apple trees are showing tiny gray-green leaves at the ends of the branches.

Holy Week is March 28 - April 4, and since we're all very busy this week, we are…

First Work Day of 2010

After a very wet start to the year, we are off and running. Thank you to Mark Martin of the City of Salisbury for quickly tilling up the gardens in the dryest week we've had so far.

Members of the Garden Group met on Saturday, March 13th, a nice sunny warm day. We created rows and mulched in between each row and around the garden using newspapers and straw. Lots and lots of newspaper, we're hoping to cut down on the weeding this year. We planted one row of potatoes (the row…

When is a Potato NOT a Potato?

When it's a sweet potato. We're planning to grow sweet potatoes this year in our garden, and I was surprised to learn the differences between the two root vegetables we call potatoes.

The regular old potato that we bake or boil or fry is a member of the family "Solanum tuberosum". To plant them, you simply cut the potato into sections around the "eyes" and stick it in the ground. Each section will grow & produce many potatoes.

The sweet potato is a…

Spring Garden 2010

The first Garden meeting of 2010 was held on Sunday February 26th. We had a small group, but as usual, charged ahead with planning. Once again, our overal goal is FOOD, and planting what will give us the most nutrition for the space and effort.

We will be using long rows (running from Council Street towards Liberty Street). The group agreed that the reason we had so many weeds last year was we didn't lay down enough newspaper, so this year we are going to be lavish with the…

Another Harvest & the WILD Childrens' Garden

Yellow squash. Bunches and bunches, and more on the way. Mandy and Judy harvested on Sunday 6/7/09, and delivered to the Rowan Helping Ministries.

The WILD garden is sprouting nicely, we had birds frollicking in the birdbath this weekend.

First Work Day of the Year at St. Luke's Community Garden

March 11, 2010 from 5:30pm to 6:30pm
Come join us for the first working day of 2010, weather permitting. Bring shovels and gloves, and wear shoes that can get dirty. We will be setting up long rows this year, and are going to start with a Spring garden. It looks like it may rain, so an alternate is 10AM Saturday March 13th.
